Q's Daily DIY Green Tips: A Not So Cool Opening in Summer

A comfortable indoor environment is on everyone's mind this summer.  If you live in a home with a chimney and are using air conditioning, make an energy saving decision and be sure the fireplace damper is closed.  To understand why, think of the standing principle that hot goes to cold.  As you cool your home, the warm air from the outside wants to replace that cold air inside.  Your chimney is a great large hole to the exterior unless you have it closed up.  Take it a step further and use an insulated fireplace plug to help keep that cool air in.
