Q's Daily DIY Green Tips: Irene's New Roof
With Hurricane Irene freshly in our rear view mirror here in Jersey, hopefully you are not in a situation where debris has damaged your roof to such extent that it needs replacing. If unfortunately that's the case, consider your options before before throwing a new cap on your house. A green roof in a less that literal sense may be the best way to go; an upgrade well worth your while. Energy Star rated shingles and reflective metal roof can reduce your roof surface temperature by 100 degrees. A lower roof temperature will result in less heat transferred to the building and potentially lower your peak cooling loads by 10 - 15%! Ask your contractor for pricing differentials and compare that to what you will save.
