What kind of hot water heater do you use? Electric? Gas?  What does that cost you when it comes to washing your clothes?  Depending on your hot water heater and washing machine type, up to 90% of the energy used washing clothes is used to make hot water.  It stands to reason that a practical step toward saving energy is to cut out this aspect of clothes cleaning.  Next time you run a load of laundry try using cold water and cold water detergent.  This approach to cleaning your clothes is a cool way to save energy in the literal sense.
