The term for electricity used by latent loads of appliances that are not turned on, or "vampire loads" is becoming more relevant with the rising cost of energy. As per the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, over 10 billion dollars are spent a year on "vampire loads." Think about all of the electrical appliances that are plugged in around your home. Flat screen TV's, DVD players, toasters, computers, laptops, and coffee makers. The list goes on. The first tip on how to stake these electrical vampires is easy. Save some energy. Unplug your unessential appliances when they are not in use.
